Sports Illustrated HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Presented byTHE U.S. MARINE CORPS

CONNOR BRUCE, the starting catcher at Monte Vista High in Danville, Calif., helped the Mustangs to the East Bay league co-championship last year and is one of the school's Rally Chairs—in charge of morning announcements, pep rallies and general school spirit. One of the most visible students on campus, the fun-loving senior is serious about highlighting less-visible members of the community. The president of the school's Friends of the Special Olympics club, Connor volunteers with special-education students during lunch every day, and for the past four years, he's been an assistant coach for the Danville A's, a Little League Challenger Division team for athletes with mental and physical disabilities. "It's really rewarding to watch them hit the ball and see all the joy they get running to first," he says. "It warms my heart." For more on Connor, visit SI.com/HSathlete
