An Athlete Lost in Orlando
Akyra Murray, 18 and the youngest victim of the Pulse nightclub massacre in Orlando last week, could have easily appeared in FACES IN THE CROWD. She surpassed the career 1,000-point mark as a senior point guard and captain at West Catholic Preparatory High and led the Philadelphia Catholic League in scoring this past season with 21.7 ppg as the Burrs won the District 12 Class A title. Instead Murray, who graduated third in her class and was set to play at Division II Mercyhurst in Erie, Pa., is now being remembered for the promise she held on and off the court. "She hadn't reached a fraction of her potential," says her coach, Beulah Osueke, who recalled a player she described as hungry, humble, selfless and "the most coachable kid I've ever seen. Losing her is heartbreaking."
