FOR AUG. 8, 2016

The worst part of Roger Goodell's disciplinary process is that he is allowed to hear the appeals of his own decisions (It's About the Principal). How can anybody think that is fair, no matter what the facts show?

Norm Miller, Farmington Hills, Mich.

As a long-suffering Cleveland fan I want to thank you for the article on the Indians. As of Aug. 14 they're in first place in the American League Central and second in the AL in runs, with Francisco Lindor and Mike Napoli scoring 156 between them. They have three guys batting at least .300: Jose Ramirez (.314), Tyler Naquin (.314) and Lindor (.309). I don't know whether to laugh or cry. First the Cavaliers win, and now the Indians are on the brink.

Trevor Hastings, Chagrin Falls, Ohio

Since he took over as commissioner 10 years ago, Goodell's main goal has been to improve the NFL's image. Sure he has made some mistakes along the way (Ray Rice), but we should all appreciate his passion. Outside of Brady, the majority of the players discussed in your article were accused of violent acts, both on and off the field, and that has no place in the NFL.

COVER

The ghost LeBron James should be chasing is the same one Michael Jordan failed to catch: Bill Russell, who won 11 NBA championships during his 13 seasons, versus Jordan's six in 15.

SCORECARD

I wish Dan Patrick had told Matt Damon in his interview that it's kind of difficult to find Deflategate evidence against Tom Brady after Brady decided to smash his phone into pieces.

POINT AFTER

Steve Rushin's article about a world without sports was clever, funny and scary. Without sports, I guess we would have to go to "reality TV" bars.
