FOR OCT.16--23, 2017

Jeremy Woo's thoughtful column on lowering the NBA age minimum (SCORECARD) refers to the rarity of four-year players today, as if they are a relic of a bygone era. But one need only look at last season's NBA Rookie of the Year, Bucks guard Malcolm Brogdon, to see how maturity and skill can be gained by a full college experience.

I couldn't help but laugh when Dan Greene described the duality of Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce as "so Schrödinger." How many readers, I wonder, understood the reference? Perhaps Greene can work in mentions of Planck or Feynman in the future. Thanks for keeping us thinking.

Tim Riedel, WATERTOWN, WIS.

If I had a vote for your Sportsman of the Year, it would go to Paralympian Rob Jones (SCORECARD). His journey renews my faith in mankind and reminds me that almost anything is possible. More awareness of stories like his would be much appreciated these days.

Michael J. Ryan, WORTH, ILL.

Thank you for shedding a little more light on the Oct. 1 shooting in Las Vegas, by way of the Golden Knights (SCORECARD). Vegas is more than neon and casinos; it is a community that cares deeply about its members. This lifelong Bruins fan now has a new favorite team in the Western Conference.

COVER

What a great NBA preview issue. I only wish the previous week's NHL Preview had half as much focus on hockey as this one did on basketball.

POINT AFTER

Hats off to Michael Rosenberg for putting into words exactly what every true Chargers fan has felt through this relocation to L.A. The idea that you can uproot a team and believe the fan base is going to be O.K. with that is fantasy. Let this be a lesson to the NFL owners and commissioner: Before you approve a move, know that you are weakening your product.
