FOR DEC. 4, 2017
Seeing the buyout figures for recently fired college football coaches reach $60 million (SCORECARD), and knowing their replacements will receive millions in annual salaries and long-term contracts, I couldn't help but think that money would be better served on scholarships for deserving students who cannot afford higher education.
Dave Thomas, CINCINNATI
There was nothing to admire, sympathize with or even pity in your feature on newly reinstated Browns receiver Josh Gordon(Trust In Me). The whole story was an orchestrated interview, containing Gordon's assertions and no other perspectives or accounts. Why pander to this recidivist and his obvious con man of a manager?
Azim Nakhooda CHAGRIN FALLS, OHIO
On the issue of including players like Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds in the Hall of Fame, I think baseball purists align much more with Joe Morgan than with Jay Jaffe (SCORECARD). Steroids enhanced performances in long-term ways that changed revered records, boosted contracts, falsely excited fans and possibly led to championships that may not have otherwise been achieved.

It's disappointing to see Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield—who has been punished for disrespectful conduct on the sideline and who once drilled an opponent in the head with a ball during warmups—on the cover. Are wins really the only things that matter?
Marc Albert Baldwin CATONSVILLE, MD.
Thank you, Andy Staples, for being willing to defend the current four-team college football playoff format. I find the stampede to support a "March Madness in January" system shortsighted, showing little respect for the local traditions and economic boons bowl games have created in their respective communities.
