"NOT JUST a celebration but a statement." That's how SPORTS ILLUSTRATED photographer Taylor Ballantyne describes the project she helmed for this year's swimsuit issue, In Her Own Words. SI gathered 10 models—like gymnast Aly Raisman (above), from the 2018 magazine, and Paulina Porizkova, from issues past—and an all-female crew to photograph the women with minimal hair styling and makeup, dressed in nothing but "the positive words they chose to define themselves," painted onto their bodies. Survivor. Human. Fearless. The result, says Ballantyne: "This firm statement that says, 'I'm O.K. with every piece of this—why not?'" That confidence shows on the page, but SI TV was also there to document the shoot, and there's a vulnerability, a humanity behind it all that only video can capture.

That was 2018. Want a tease of Swimsuit 2019? Check out our behind-the-scenes look at SI's Swim Search, an ongoing contest that started with 5,000 swimsuit hopefuls sharing pics on Instagram before being whittled down to six finalists, whom you can vote for today at Make sure to watch before voting; the winner will be back next year as a full-fledged SI model.
